An Introduction to the Ninety Names of Allah

Why should we begin to learn the ninety names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ?

Consider for a moment what topic is most frequently mentioned in the Qur’an. Did you guess the Day of Resurrection? Perhaps marriage? Or maybe the various descriptions of paradise? Since this is a page dedicated to the 99 names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ, you might have guessed correctly: the names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ are indeed the most repeated subject in the entire Qur’an.

The attributes of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ are the most recurring theme throughout the Qur’an. It is challenging to find a page where we do not learn something about Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ. We read about His kindness, mercy, wisdom, knowledge, and omnipresence, as well as His self-sufficiency and worthiness of all praise. Imam Al-Shafi’i mentioned, “Whatever the Umma says is merely a commentary on the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ, and whatever the traditions of the Prophet say is merely a commentary on the Qur’an, and whatever the Qur’an says, it is a mere commentary on the excellent names of Allah.”

Memorizing the names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ might seem like a simple task. It may appear basic, but in reality, knowing the names of Allah is a strong foundation of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). Part of believing in Allah and His oneness is to know His names and attributes. Developing a clear understanding of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ starts with knowing His essence, and we can begin this journey by studying His names.

Can you truly love and respect someone you do not know? It’s difficult to form a deep connection with a stranger. While you can respect and empathize with them, true connection comes from learning about their background, upbringing, passions, and interests. Similarly, the more you learn about the names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ, the more you will love, fear, respect, and obey Him.

Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is close to us: “And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein” (50:16). The crucial question is, what effort have we made to be close to Him? These names were revealed so we could learn about Him and deepen our connection with our Creator. Like any relationship, the strongest and most enduring connections require effort and hard work.

These names are not superficial. Some may seem similar, but they are not synonymous. Each name represents a unique attribute, highlighting a virtue or value that is noble in Islam. Knowing these names is a source of knowledge. Even more important is to integrate them into your life and emulate these attributes to the best of your ability.

Understanding the ninety names of Allah allows us to see the world in a new light. Recognizing Allah as Al-Alim (the all-knowing), Al-Hakeem (the wise one), and Al-Muqsit (the just one) helps us understand that whatever happens to a believer is ultimately for their good.

Suhaib reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Strange are the ways of a believer for there is good in every affair of his, and this is not the case with anyone else except in the case of a believer; if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks (God), thus there is good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is good for him in it.” [3] By believing in Allah and knowing His attributes, we would not question, complain, or curse our circumstances when faced with difficulties. Understanding the beautiful names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ brings comfort and peace, guiding us to endure patiently.

There is nothing greater than Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ. Therefore, studying His attributes is one of the greatest pursuits you can undertake.

Origin of Asma ul Husna

Asma ul Husna, meaning “the beautiful names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ,” originates from the Qur’an and is supported by hadith. The concept of Allah’s beautiful names and attributes is explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an.

The Qur’an states: “Say to them (O Prophet!): ‘Call upon Him as Allah or call upon Him as al-Rahman; call Him by whichever name you will, all His names are beautiful. Neither offer your Prayer in too loud a voice, nor in a voice too low; but follow a middle course.'” (17:110)

Another verse emphasizes: “Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors. And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.” (7:55-56)

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet said: “Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine Names, whoever counts them shall enter Paradise.” [4,2]

He also said: “Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah’s aid.” [5]

From this, we understand that studying the ninety-nine names of Allah is also a study of du’a (supplication) or ibadah (worship). These names were revealed to help us be mindful of them when we call upon Him.

The Names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ Are Not Limited to 99

It’s important to clarify that the names of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ are not confined to just ninety-nine. The hadith, “Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one” [2], emphasizes these particular names for a specific purpose, stating that “whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise” [2]. This can be compared to someone saying they have ninety dollars, which doesn’t necessarily mean that is all they possess.

Supporting the view of Allah having more than ninety names, the following hadith is often referenced: Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“If any Muslim is afflicted with distress and makes this supplication, then his supplication will be answered: O Allah, I am your servant, the son of your servant, the son of your maidservant. My forelock is in your hand, your command concerning me prevails, and your decision concerning me is just.

I call upon you by every one of the beautiful names with which you have described yourself, or which you have revealed in your Book, or you have taught to any of your creatures, or which you have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with you, to make the Quran the delight of my soul, the light of my heart, and to remove my sadness and dispel my anxiety.”

The Prophet said, “If he says this, Allah will remove his affliction and replace it with joy and happiness.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn it?” The Prophet said, “Yes, whoever hears it should know it.” [6]

The phrase, “or which you have chosen to keep in the knowledge of the unseen with you,” indicates that there are names of Allah that remain unknown. Indeed, there are works by various scholars that document more than ninety names, affirming the richness and vastness of Allah’s attributes.
